That can't be right...

About a month ago we were on our way to my in-laws house to celebrate Thanksgiving (we celebrated early with them because we were going to be out of town on the actual day) and we stopped to get gas.  I ran in to get a couple of drinks and I found Arizona Cranberry Ice Tea.  I thought it was terribly festive so I tried it and it was awesome.  I looked around every where I went but I couldn't find it, except at this one gas station.  Until last night.  I found the motherload... BRILLIANT!  I almost started to load up the cart and then thought I should probably calculate the Points+ value on that.  So I did and the can was 6 points.  Then I calculated the Points+ value on a regular can of Arizona Lemon Iced Tea and it was 9 points.  NINE FREAKING POINTS!!!  Well that certainly explains why my weight loss hasn't been very much the last few weeks!  I'd been drinking 3-4 cans per week.  Apparently I'm back to Diet Snapple (which is delicious) or figuring out how to make my own Cranberry Iced Tea.

Have you ever thought you were doing really well and then found out that you made a huge error like this?

  1. Funny thing, I was just at a beverage flavor conference last month for work, and got quite the education. Your experience is not uncommon...many people trying to lose weight focus so much on their FOOD and not so much on the beverage. Scott quit drinking Mountain Dew and lost 20 pounds in a few weeks. The spooky thing about beverages is that there are now multiple servings in one bottle (was there only one serving in your Arizona tea?). In any case, the food scientist in me wants to warn you and everyone reading this to watch your artificial sweetner intake (Nutrasweet, Stevia, High Fructose Corn Syrup, etc.). Many studies of these have been shown to interfere with the body's ability to break down the sweetner, therefore storing it instead (this is actually one of the theorized contributors to obesity...read the book "The China Study", Amazon.com for $10...it is a fascinating study in nutrition). So keep with the WW motto of enjoying in moderation! I agree the diet Snapples are tasty, esp the Peach! :)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year all!

  2. I'm usually pretty good about monitoring everything, including drinks but for the tea (which had a whopping 3 servings per can and each serving was 3 points+ making it a 9 points+ value for the whole can) I looked at the calories and fat. The calories were low (maybe 60-80 per serving) and no fat so I thought I was in the clear. That was so not true... :(

Dan did something similar where he cut out most, if not all, soda for awhile (he has one from time to time now) and lost a bunch of weight too. Those boys and the soda... grrr... :) I think I cut out soda and maybe only lost a few pounds but I definitely felt better once I wasn't drinking all of that. Both from a sugar perspective and from a carbonation perspective.

Hope you guys have a very Merry Christmas!
