It's ironic... don't ya think?

Growing up we never had name brand clothes unless we found them at a garage sale, which, since I was overweight even in high school that rarely happened.  Before my senior year of high school we were in Oshkosh at the outlet mall and I bought my first pair of name brand jeans.  A pair of Levi's that I'd use in my senior pictures.  I thought that these pants made me cool (wrong) and I loved wearing them and was sad when I couldn't fit into them any longer.  However, I never had the heart to get rid of them because I always thought that one day I'd fit into them again.  A few months ago I pulled them out to try them on and while I could get them on I couldn't button them or zip them so I put them back in the closet and I forgot about them.  Until last night.

I have no idea why I got it into my brain that I should try them on last night especially since I gained so much weight on vacation but I did and I couldn't go to sleep without trying them on.  I pulled them out of the closet and this time they went on with ease and I was able to button and zip them.  Awesome, until I looked in the mirror and realized that the thighs were too big.  I think Jen would be proud of me to know that this is an accomplishment (realizing that the pants don't need to be of the MC Hammer variety) but I was mad that I missed the opportunity to wear these pants again.  Especially considering I went out and bought a new pair of jeans to take on the trip!  Bollocks!

So, when I went to my meeting today I told this story and one of my meeting mates said to me "you can't be mad about not fitting in them, can you?" and I was a little taken back by the question.  It wasn't really the question but the fact that I actually didn't know how to answer it.  I mean, I know that I am not mad that I've lost the weight!  This might take some more thinking...

In the meantime, in case you missed my new pumpkin recipe you should check it out.  It is super yummy and only 3PP per huge serving!!  Even Dan likes it (and he generally hates sweets!)

While you're checking things out don't forget that you can still donate to my fundraising campaign.  I have already raised some money but need to raise even more.  The donations are tax deductible because the money is going to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) which is an "A" rated charity.  Please take a minute to donate and feel free to share the link/information with others!  http://www.active.com/donate/illinoisLV12/LV_JMcElro

It's good and it's bad

My weigh-in today was good, let me first say that.  I lost 2.2 pounds which is a lot, in my opinion, and I'm not really sure how it's happening.  The bad part is that I lost another point in my Daily Points Target.  I'm not really sure how to feel about that.  When I saw my doctor a few weeks ago she expressed surprise at the amount of weight I've lost between last November and now.  I can assure you (and her) that it is a safe rate of weight loss.  It's one of the metrics I check often!

While losing daily points is slightly depressing (but in the "it's hurts so good kinda way") it's exciting to me to continue losing and getting closer to my goal.  But, finding creative ways to use my points so that I still feel satisfied continues to challenge me.  I love this plan and I continue to work this plan because I am able to eat well.  Steak and seafood find their way on our plates more often than not.  Delicious fresh vegetables are now a welcome addition to the table and we continue to look for new ways to prepare them to keep our tastebuds happy.

Dan has told me (several times recently) that I should probably be eating some of my activity points.  I tend to not eat them, not for any particular reason other than I'm not usually hungry.  There are some days where I do feel like I could eat the world, and I try to moderate that but on the normal day I just don't feel it and I don't want to consume food just because I have points left.

And since I have no funny story to tell you tonight (honestly I wrote one and then read it and then realized it wasn't funny) I will share some funny photos with you.  We needed to take some photos of the two of us and we were getting a little frustrated with the results.  So, we had to shake things up ... We also have a whole new respect for our friends who are photographers.

Walk like an Egyptian??
Deep Thoughts... or ... you know, my thoughts
There are no words for this one
See you all on Thursday for another Thankful Things Thursday!

You won't even believe this!

Thankfully, my friend Sheri doesn't mind
when I stop by for an impromptu photo shoot!

If you haven't read the Thankful Things Thursday post you should go do that now.  Go on, I'll wait.

Still here?  Great, because you may have noticed the photo that I posted and I promised more details about that.  Well... here we go.

Last fall the Dr. Oz show partnered with Weight Watchers and Sharecare to sponsor a contest called Transformation Nation:  Million Dollar You. Contestants had to weigh in and a Weight Watchers location to and register online to enter the contest (which awards the winner one million dollars!). There were seven different areas that the contest focused on:
  • Tell a Friend
  • Official Weigh-in/Calculate Your BMI
  • Connect with Your Doctor
  • Learn Your Family's Health History
  • Get More Sleep
  • Assess Your Stress
  • Start New Fitness Habits
Most of these things were no brainers – tell a friend? You guys know I can blast out an email begging people to help me out! Remember all those loving emails I sent helping me raise money for the Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services Center last year? (Here's a little foreshadowing for you, they'll be coming out again this year!) Get more sleep? No problem there at all – let's face it does anyone need encouragement to try to get more sleep? Especially once you start training to run a race? Staying awake seems like the challenge! Starting new fitness habits? Please see the need for more sleep! Anyway, since I was already on a weight loss journey this seemed like something I'd be interested in.

About a week ago was the final weigh-in. During the course of the contest I lost nearly 47 pounds. I was thrilled but honestly didn't think that anything would happen with that. I read (or more accurately mis-read) the rules when it said that you had to achieve or maintain a healthy BMI. Apparently there was also a clause in there that said in order to be in the Top 200 you had to EITHER achieve/maintain a BMI in the healthy range OR if you lost 10% of your body weight.

On Tuesday morning I got a phone call. From the Dr. Oz show. I'd made the Top 200. I thought it was a joke. Hali, the Associate Producer, told me it wasn't. Thankfully she was really nice about everything and proceeded to ask me a bunch of questions about my journey and my life and all kinds of stuff. The answers are being used to judge who will move on to the Top 50 so fingers crossed that I'll move on!

Cookbooks, Canines and Cleaning. Oh my!

It's Thursday again and that means it's time to reflect on the things that we're thankful for.  If you're unfamiliar with what TTT is, please reference the original TTT post.  In no particular order here are the things that have made my life awesome this week.

1)  Between Thanksgiving and Christmas I decided to order a new cookbook for myself.  I love cookbooks, which is to say I love reading them.  I sometimes forget that I'm actually supposed to cook out of them but that's another story.  This one though is totally different.  I ordered One Pot Cookbook from Amazon because it had a slower cooker chapter as well as having the Points+ values for all the recipes.  We've made about 10 recipes out of this book and all of them have been amazing.  Just when you think you find a favorite we try a new one and it's better than the last.  I'm so glad that I bought this cookbook because we've been eating pretty good around here lately!

2)  With the unseasonably warm weather I've been logging quite a few miles in February.  However I noticed that my feet were starting to hurt so I knew it was time for new running shoes!  I am a firm believer that if you're going to be doing a lot of activity that you  need to have the right gear and that means you have to spend some money on your shoes. Recently Dan and I headed to the New Balance store and got fitted for our new sneaks.  I am so thankful I did because my feet haven't been hurting anymore making those workouts so much  more enjoyable.

3)  I am really thankful for my dogs, Briscoe and Tucker.  From time to time they are really frustrating when they start to fight or find it necessary to go outside every 5 minutes.  However, they do bring so much joy to me every day that I can't imagine not having them.  They are always happy to see me when I come home, no matter how long I've been gone or whether I've brought them a new toy or not.  Plus, Tucker makes a great walking partner and I know Briscoe will make a good running partner when I'm ready for that level of intensity.

4)  As of Sunday I met my activity goal for February.  Granted I set a relatively low goal for February because it's a short month and I wasn't sure what the weather would be like.  I'm excited that I reached my goal and now any activity I get in is really just a bonus but it will definitely help me reach my annual activity goal so that's awesome.

5)  Last week we had dinner with our friends, Sheri and Bob.  While we were there we started talking about hoarding - you've seen that show on TLC right?  Well, the next morning I couldn't stop thinking about our conversation and about the contents of my closet and dresser drawers.  It haunted me so much I got motivated to clean so I went downstairs and got some garbage bags and started sorting clothes.  I have 3 bags ready to go to Goodwill so far.  I am definitely thankful for that dinner and the motivation to purge!!

So, what are you thankful for?

Thankful Things Thursday

I didn't forget about Thankful Things Thursday - I've been making a little list all week long when I have 'oh man thank goodness I have this thing' moment.  If you aren't familiar go to this Thankful Things Thursday post where I explain all about it.  So, without further chatting here we go...

1)  I am so thankful that we have friends like Sheri and Bob.  Last night we had the most amazing dinner with them and we laughed until my cheeks hurt.  They made this fantastic gumbo recipe (I have already requested said recipe and will likely be making it and then blogging about it!!) which was perfect because the weather was a little overcast yesterday and it was a great comforting, spicy dish.  YUM.

2)  The other day I wanted a snack but also needed to get some dairy in for the day.  I grabbed a container of yogurt and some fresh blueberries.  It was such a great combination and I love it but sometimes forget how much I love it.  In fact, I'm planning on having it today.

3)  I am currently loving all the Pandora stations especially the cardio/workout themed ones.  I was really getting tired of my playlist but realized that a lot of the music I own isn't really all that upbeat so it doesn't motivate me to push myself during a workout.  The Pandora stations have and I usually only end up with one or two commercials during the hour that I listen.

4)  After working up a fabulous sweat (seriously can someone explain to me why when it's 20 degrees outside I am as sweaty as I am if it's 90 degrees outside?) I love jumping into a nice hot shower. There just isn't anything better than cooling down a little bit (or really warming up I suppose!) and then hitting the shower.

5)  This week, again, I had to use my "snow chains" (as Dan and I refer to them) for my shoes.  For my birthday my mother-in-law bought me a pair of Ice Trekkers.  I've worn them in Northern Wisconsin where there was a ton of snow and I've worn them down here where the ice was the bigger problem.  I loved wearing them in WI but down here I'm not crazy about them. After a few miles I can tell that stride changes slightly since the "snow chains" are actually hitting the pavement/sidewalk instead of sinking into the snow   They do work tremendously well and I can appreciate that and the fact that I haven't fallen down (knock on wood) yet so I'll continue wearing them.

So, now tell me, what are you thankful for?

Thankful Things Thursday

One of my favorite bloggers, Ali, writes a post every Thursday called Thankful Things Thursday.  I love reading Ali's blog for a few reasons, one because she has Crohn's (me too!), because she runs (I'm trying!), she's funny (well, I'll let you judge on that one) and she loves dogs (I definitely do).  Ali also started the Thankful Things Thursday posts that I've seen a couple of my other favorite bloggers adopt and they always make me happy no matter what is going on.  So here we go.

I'm thankful for:

  1. Wicking clothes.  I was out for a very sweaty and cold (I don't know how that works exactly) walk/run this morning with Tucker when the wind picked up on our way home.  I was glad that my clothes were wicking because otherwise that would have been brutally cold.  My hat just thinsulate, which is terribly warm but when my head sweats it's bad news bears.  At least that only happens on my head.
  2. The patience my husband has when I start to freak out about converting dotted decimal to binary and calculating subnetting.  He reminds me that things will be fine and even if I get a bad grade in the class it is not the end of the world (I don't necessarily believe him).
  3. Speaking of class I'm thankful that I finally understand how to convert dotted decimal to binary.  Converting to hex is a whole other story.
  4. Gummy vitamins.  Seriously, I really love them especially the sour ones.  They make it enjoyable to have to take pills.  After having to take a lot of pills during my early Crohn's days I am hesitant to like to take any pills long term but these are awesome.  If you haven't tried them you really ought to.
  5. After getting home from my walk/run this morning (3.1 miles walking, 0.7 miles running) and I sync'd my Garmin Forerunner to my computer and started to look at my stats I realized how thankful I am to have that to keep me on pace.  It encourages me to keep trying harder and pushing myself farther.
So, what are you thankful for?  Let's hear it!!

My motivation

Originally, I wasn't going to post because I just posted it on Sunday.  In case you missed the "news", I walked my first 9K!!  But I was asked a question last night in the meeting that I thought was important and it made me want to blog again.  So, here we go...

During the celebrations portion of the meeting Karen celebrated my 9K and asked me how it felt.  Amazing, and exhausting and fabulous (of course).  Karen asked if I'd share my weight loss total (there were a few new joiners in the room) so I said I joined in July of 2010 and I've lost 131 pounds (which is apparently wrong after I calculated it last night) and one of the members asked me how do I stay motivated?

Now THAT is a really good question that I answered during the meeting but then thought about it some more... and wanted to kind of answer it again.  Before I started Weight Watchers I would read food blogs - people taking pictures of all kinds of rich and glorious food?  Yes, please!  I'd also been reading a blog called Carrots 'n Cake (CnC) which has quite a lot of food pictures and recipes but it is also filled with information about fitness (the author is a marathoner and regularly writes about running and strength training).  I really started leaning towards reading CnC rather than the other food blogs because Tina's recipes were healthier and generally after posting a recipe or picture of food she talked about working out which always reminds me that you can have good food (and drink) as long as you also get in the activity.  I've mostly done away with the other blogs that only sported the high calorie/no activity posts in favor of something healthier.

The ultimate reason to stay motivated, and one that I mentioned in the meeting last night, is that I don't want to be defined by my weight anymore.  I've spent my entire life being overweight and being limited to what I can do, what I can wear or where I can shop and frankly I'm tired of it.  I want to be able to do things without having to think, I can't do that cause I'm not in shape for that.  For example, next year I'll be married to the most awesome man for five years and we're going back to Alaska (we were there on our honeymoon) and one of the things I want to do is hike a glacier.  We kind of did it last time but had to stop and rest about a hundred times on the way up and we never made it to the edge of the glacier.  These are the kinds of things I want to be able to do.

Oh, and maybe do the Hustle up the Hancock.  I'm still thinking about that one.

One more thing to note... this year has been a whirlwind and I'm going to end it with a bang!  I'm doing a 5K on December 3 which will support the Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Center in Oshkosh, WI.  I set a fundraising goal of $500 but would love to raise even more than that.  Please consider donating through my fundraising page to help raise money for this great charity.  Your contribution is tax deductible because this is a 501(c)3 charity.

Here is the full link, if you want to spread the word to help me raise more money:  http://www.active.com/donate/raceforthelight/JMcElro85

Here is some information about the Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Center:

I DID IT!!! (The 9K version)

Crossing the finish line
I walked my first 9K today and I will definitely do it again. There were some things I wish I'd done differently, like not getting sick last week and missing out on some crucial training days, which really would have just put my mind at ease before and during the race.  The view from the course was amazing as we walked past Lake Michigan and through North Avenue beach and finished in Lincoln Park.

It's easy to be inspired by the other people in the area and there was no shortage of runners, walkers and bikers along the course.  When I see them I want to go faster which was kind of a struggle from time to time because it takes me off my game which frustrates me.  I know that the more I do this (more training and more races) that I will get comfortable being at my pace and this desire to constantly go faster or keep up with others will pass, or at least subside.

About a mile away from the finish line my fabulously supportive and funny sister-in-law, Laura (who ran the race today), came and met me and gave me the push to get through the end.  I don't know why but it was reassuring to see her along the course and being able to talk to her took my mind off the fact that my side hurt and my legs were getting tired.  It was exactly what I needed at the moment that I needed it.  (THANKS LAURA!)

My unofficial time (based on the app on my iPhone which I forgot to stop when I crossed the finish line) was 1:25:49 which was 5 minutes faster than when I walked the 9K in training.  I was happy although I think the app hit a couple of glitches while I was walking so I'm really waiting to see what my chip time was before I get excited.

After the race we headed to Revolution Brewing for some lunch and drinks.  It was certainly a high PointsPlus day but one that I thought I earned considering all the activity.  I suppose I'll know for sure when I get on the scale on Tuesday.  :)

Realistic Role Models

Today I had to be at my office for a meeting which ran way longer than it was supposed to and I didn't make it home in time for my meeting.  Luckily I ran into many of my Tuesday ladies as they were coming out of the meeting so I got lots of updates on how everyone's week went before I went to weigh in.  After my weigh-in I was talking to Pat about role models.  We both agreed that it is important to have realistic role models that we can find inspiration from.  This got me thinking about role models.

I'm extremely lucky to have some great role models.  First my sister, Brenda, has faced and conquered her own weight problems and is now competing in various races from 5Ks to marathons to triathalons.  She gives me great advice on any number of health and fitness topics.  I'm also lucky enough to have a 100+ pound loser in my meeting group, Dianne, who is so fabulously encouraging all the time regardless of the kind of week I've had. She has reached goal and become a lifetime member and still comes to meetings weekly.  It's great to see that not only can you lose a lot of weight on this program but that you can keep it off.  Lastly, my sister-in-law has battled cancer and is excelling in races like the Warrior Dash.

Since I started this journey I've also found out that there are a lot of people who are inspiring me to get active.    Several of my friends have done the Warrior Dash over the weekend.  Congratulations to you all! My friend, Don, is running the Chicago Marathon in a few short weeks.

I guess what I hadn't realized was that I have an extensive list of role models.  Wow, how amazing is that?  There are even people who you don't really expect to be interested who are willing to offer encouragement and advice when I'm having a rough time.  (Yes, I'm lookin' at you Chris!)  I know that without all of these people that I wouldn't be as successful as I've been.  So, to all of you, THANK YOU!

Do you have great role models?  What do you look for in a role model?

One Hundred and Four!

So, I surpassed 100 pounds today!!!!
(Yes, that totally deserved four exclamation points)

I've been walking a lot and even shaved FIVE MINUTES off my 5K time since my first 5K in mid-May.  I knew I only had two pounds to go after my weigh in last week so I was really hoping that this would be it but when I got on the scale I didn't expect the number that I saw.

I knew I hit 100 pounds as soon as I stepped on the scale.  Once my weight had been logged I wanted to run out into the store because I'd heard about a new Crystal Light product I wanted to try.  On my way out of the meeting room I met up with some favorite meeting members and that is when I realized....
I lost 6 pounds since last week.  SIX POUNDS!!!

WOAH!

I don't think I have any tremendous advice to leave you with this week other than to keep going.  While it may not be a huge milestone week for you, every week is something.  Even weeks when the scale is not moving the direction you want, or when it's not moving at all, keep going with your plan because it's the only way you'll ever get to your goal, and that feeling is awesome.

My Tuesday Ladies

This post will be short and sweet, mostly because I'm not feeling well this week.  My weigh-in this week was fine but not great, I lost 0.6 pounds.  It was the support that I got from the ladies who regularly attend my Tuesday meeting that really keep me in check and encourage me to keep going.  So, to my Tuesday cheerleaders, I say THANK YOU!!
