As much as I was trying to just be calm about my goal weight through half marathon training it was still bothering me. I feel like I've been struggling through the last 5 pounds for MONTHS. I know... boo hoo for me, right? Well, I went to see my doctor to try to figure out what I should be aiming for but it turns out that it's not quite as black and white as I was hoping. In fact, it could not be more gray. My doctor agreed that the goal weight (based on my height) was going to be a struggle given because that weight range doesn't take some things into consideration (e.g. bone structure). Ultimately, we decided to change my goal weight (yeah, closer!) and yet I felt let down when I left the doctor's office.
My new goal puts me 6.2 pounds away from goal but based on how much I've struggled over the past couple of months it still feels like it is so far away. I am trying to wrap my head around how to lose another 6.2 pounds... given the struggle from the last 8 weeks it does seem impossible but I am going to give it my best shot and see what happens.
Because Getting Healthy is HALF the battle!
This blog is all about my journey from fat to ... well, who knows?
I'll tell you about my good days, bad days and everything in between.

Another week....
A few weeks ago I proclaimed that I wouldn't "care" about weight loss during half marathon training. I've been trying really hard to not "care" but I pretty much suck at that. It certainly doesn't help when I see the scale creeping back up. The only thing keeping me a little bit sane about this is that I've been not only enjoying my half marathon training but I feel like I've been putting in solid training sessions. I know that with the increased mileage that my appetite will (likely) increase as well but I'm trying to keep that in check by eating healthy protein, both to keep me satisfied as well as to help with muscle recovery.
In fact, someone posted a link in one of my Weight Watchers forums to the Kashi protein calculator recently so I used to to figure a couple of different calculations and the highest amount of protein it told me I should be eating is 140 grams and the lowest is 128 grams so I decided to average it out for 132-133 grams. I am going to try getting in that amount of protein for a couple of weeks to see how I feel and if it impacts my weight. I will admit that getting in that amount of protein and staying within my daily points target has been difficult. I've had to make a few changes, for example, something like greek yogurt or cottage cheese for dessert rather than a cookie or ice cream. Seriously, I love cookies and ice cream, this is a major change.
So... what's been going on with you? How do you mix things up to keep the scale moving in the right direction?

How much is enough?
![]() |
| Top Left: July 2010 Bottom Left: December 2012 Right: December 2012 |
So, I am perplexed. I don't know whether to keep trying to lose weight or declare victory at ~205 pounds lost? Even if I was able to hang on and lose the weight to get to 150 pounds would it be sustainable? How do you know when enough is enough?

Don't know what I did ....
At my weigh-in today I thought Martha, the WW receptionist, was crazy. Straight up bat shit, going to the crazy house crazy. She told me I'd lost 4 pounds. FOUR POUNDS!! No way, I said, you mean I lost four tenths of a pound. Then she showed me the computer screen. Dumbfounded I looked from the computer screen to my tracker and back again. Then I did a double take. Oh my ... oops. She was right. So I'm sorry about that crazy comment Martha. That one was my bad.
Now, don't get me wrong I am thankful that I lost weight. I'm especially thankful that I lost such a large amount. I am however questioning HOW I did it and how to make it happen again. I realize, after the last two years of trial and error (e.g. gains and losses) that not every week is a loss and certainly not a multiple pound loss. It is, however, pretty common for me to weigh-in and think about what I did over the week and figure out what worked or what went tragically wrong. This week I didn't have an epic workout week like I did two weeks ago (earned 72 activity points but was EXHAUSTED) so maybe it was the effort in trying to stay within my daily points target? I'm not sure (and Dan told me to stop hypothesizing on it).
Dan's other piece of sage advice when I told him I lost the weight and didn't know how? Just do that again next week.
Do you ever have weeks where the scale tells you something fabulous but you wonder when the other shoe will drop? Show me some love in the comments and tell me about it.

Following the Plan
Last week was a bit of a mental mess for me. My weigh-in was disappointing and I was pissy about that. That attitude stayed with me more days than it should have to the point that Mom called me out about not posting a Thankful Things Thursday. Yeah, it was a bad week. But, I followed the Weight Watchers plan the way it's prescribed, mostly. Several months ago my friend, Jen (clearly we were destined to be friends what with having the same name and all) and I had decided that as our daily points target got lower that it would be ok if we went over by 2 points (for the oil). So, that's what I did last week. I worked out until I couldn't anymore (62 activity points) and ended up taking yesterday and today a rest days. My result? A 4 pound loss.
Ok, so if you just follow the program you lose weight. (face meet palm) I realize this is a no brainer but sometimes, apparently, I need reminding! I'm happy with the loss and will continue being careful with the "free" fruit because that's what I suspect was my downfall. After all, I did eat an entire water melon (almost entirely by myself) in about a day and a half. Clearly, that can't be tremendously healthy. So, that's what I learned this week.
Oh, and I like to bike. Even though it hurt a little. More on that later.
And here's a completely unrelated non-scale victory I had today... you know you have a friend who has an absolutely gorgeous ring, be it wedding, engagement, etc... and also teeny tiny fingers? My friend has an engagement ring that is to die for and during the meeting I asked if I could see it (though I've seen it plenty of times) and I remarked how teeny tiny her finger was and then I slipped it on my finger. And it fit. No pushing/pulling to get it on/off, it just fit. And I felt super proud that apparently I also have teeny tiny little fingers now too instead of great big sausage like fingers that I used to have.
How about you - have you head any non-scale victories this week? If so, share!

No Cake? It's ok!
After the weigh-in last week I decided that I needed to really stay on plan and not go over my points because when we were in New York I ended up going way over and then I struggled to keep my eating under control. I tried to make good choices and was pretty successful right up until the weekend, Sunday in fact, when things kind of fell apart. We had two parties to go to this weekend (Congratulations to Bri, Happy Birthday to Dave) and both parties had cake. At the first party I ate the cake, albeit a small piece, and counted the points. I also noticed that my husband (who is not a big cake eater anyway) didn't eat cake. He just said no. I was dumbfounded... say no to cake? Why? Then I counted the points and realized that it really wasn't worth it. A slice of store bought cake with frosting is 5 points. Considering that I was really trying to stay on plan and not go over my points I was disappointed in myself. I didn't think the cake was worth 5 points and so on Monday when offered cake I politely declined. You know what? I didn't die or anything!
So, how was your weekend? Did you have any major challenges or successes?

Goals and Pants... (Clever title, eh?)
About a month or so ago I had to go into the office on a Tuesday for a lunch meeting but I left early to make it back for my meeting. Please pause and read my original post about spring races (if you haven't already) cause otherwise some of the rest of this post won't make as much sense. Go on, we'll wait.
Ok... for those who are caught up ... on Monday I received a meeting invite that requires me to go to the office on Wednesday so I made a quick dash to some stores to find a new pair of pants to wear. After hitting a few stores I stopped at Old Navy on my way home. I grabbed a pair of pants and tried them on and thought that they were a little bit big. So I went back to the shelf and grabbed another pair and tried them on. They were a little snug (though the last pair I bought stretched a little and I could feel that these would too) so I wasn't sure. Having no other choice I took a photo of myself (right) and sent it out to Jen, Mom and Brenda. Jen replied that they were good, Brenda replied and said 'Perfect', Mom replied and said "well the next size up is going to be too big". Aside from this being a 'yes or no' question rather than short answer I didn't know what to do so I did what any logical person would do - I bought the pants in 2 sizes and brought the smaller size to my meeting today to get approval from my Tuesday regulars about whether they were too small. All the ladies agreed they looked good. Even Tim, the one guy who comes to the meeting (and hardly shares anything), said I looked good. Awesome!!!
This is a big deal people because these pants are TWELVE number sizes smaller than the pants I was wearing when I joined Weight Watchers.
In yet other news... I wasnamed included in the Real Life Biggest Loser stories at FUdiet.com this week.
And finally ... Are you getting out and enjoying this beautiful summer-like weather we've been having?

Glorious Numbers
Tracking what I eat and how much activity I get (I still am not sure that what I do can be considered working out?) means that I have a lot of data from the past year to look at. So, I thought I'd give you some numbers today.
The first number is TWO (For those who just inserted The Count from Sesame Street saying ah ah ah, ONE bonus point for you) which is the number of 5Ks I've participated in, so far. The first 5K in Eagle River, WI I finished in 57 minutes and 41 seconds and the second in McHenry, IL I finished in 55 minutes and 3 seconds. I have three more races coming up this fall so if anyone wants to join me, post a comment and I'll send you more info. I'm doing one in Chicago, one in Crystal Lake. IL and one in Oshkosh, WI.
ONE. The number of dogs I will take walking with me at any one time. I took both of them once and they literally had their leashes wrapped around me and I fell down. A bunch of other bad stuff happened on that walk (some of which is funny now) so I like to think I've learned my lesson.
I've lost ELEVEN points since we started the Points Plus program. As you lose weight you lose points so this is a good thing but sometimes I'm dumbstruck by how far I've come..
EIGHT is the number of huge bags full of clothes that have gone off to Goodwill so that I can't slide back into bad habits and bigger sizes. I've kept one pair of pants so I can take an 'after' photo but that's it. I even broke down and donated some dresses (yes, actual dresses!) that had sentimental value.
For my next race I will walk 5.5 miles. On October 23 I am walking in the Title 9K. I'm excited and nervous about it all at the same time. The follow-up stat to that is likely 1 (number of beers I will drink at Revolution Brewing after the race) and about 52 (number of glasses of water or iced tea I will also consume).
Since I started "training" and tracking activity in May I've walked 182 miles. According to the software that I use this amounts to more than 25,000 calories burned. Yeah, it's gonna take me awhile to get used to that number all the while it will be climbing as I tackle more activities.
